I want our Club to become the best that we can be. This requires that we hire the best people and I am delighted to let you know that Murray Long will be joining us as our new Course Manager.
Murray is currently the Course Manager at Ferndown Golf Club – another top 100 venue. He began his career as an assistant greenkeeper at Ellesborough Golf Club in 1987, before joining Coombe Hill Golf Club four years later and becoming their Course Manager in 1995. Murray was recognised by Toro as Greenkeeper of the year in 2002, and in 2004 Coombe Hill was awarded Golf course renovation and Club of the year by Golf World Magazine following a major renovation of the course’s bunkers. In 2005 Murray became Course and Estate Manager at Sunningdale Golf Club – arguably the top job in the land – where he worked for nearly 10 years. Over that period the Old and New course became the number one and two inland courses in the UK.
Murray is excited to join us. In fact, he disclosed that 10 years ago while at Sunningdale, he told his friends that taking this role at Saunton would be his dream job. He loves our venue and courses and has a real affinity with the area. He has been coming here for over thirty years and is a keen water sportsman and a golfer. He recognises that our courses are fabulous, but also sees significant opportunity to take them forward.
Murray will start with us on a part time basis on the 5th October before becoming full time at the beginning of March when his commitments at Ferndown come to an end.
We are delighted to have secured someone of Murray’s talent and reputation. And we are confident that he will work with the Greens Committee and our excellent Greens Team to take our courses to the next level.
I’m sure you will all join me in welcoming Murray to the Club.
